Captain Hagen graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1982 with a B.S. degree in Aviation Administration. While there, he became a Certified Flight Instructor. After college he chased his dream to fly for a major airline and was hired in 1989. He was Captain for over 23 years and was a Line Check Airman for 15 years. He is married with three boys who all graduated from Bethany Academy.
The United Christian Academy Thunder Aviation story began back in 2018 at Bethany Academy, one of our legacy schools. One of the high school math teachers (Gene Poole), along with key supporters and donors had a dream to launch this opportunity for high school students. Under the current leadership of retired airline captain, Mitch Hagen, our aviation courses continue to be a popular option amongst our high school elective courses.
Teacher Bio:
UCA’s aviation program follows a curriculum developed by the AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association), taking students through four levels of progressive learning. Along the way, students build the ground school knowledge and skills needed to work toward a private pilot’s license. Students also have opportunities to participate in aviation-related field trips as they arise, providing hands-on experiences and a closer look at the many careers and opportunities within the industry.
Aviation 1 - Introduces students to the aviation and aerospace industry, including careers, aircraft operations, and aviation history. Students explore the science of flight, the four forces of flight, and aircraft controls, along with hands-on flight simulator experiences.
Aviation 2 - Builds on Aviation 1 as students explore aircraft components and systems, including engines, propellers, fuel, hydraulics, electrical systems, and pressurization. Students also study weather and gain hands-on simulator experience operating an aircraft from takeoff to landing.
Aviation 3 - Takes students deeper into airport operations, air traffic control, and flight planning. Students learn about airport markings, signage, traffic patterns, communications, and Federal Aviation Regulations while planning and flying cross-country flights in the simulator. The course prepares students to pursue the FAA Private Pilot written exam.
Aviation 4 - Introduces students to instrument flight and advanced skills for flying under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). Through classroom instruction and regular simulator practice, students refine their instrument skills, gain experience with the ATC system, and explore complex aircraft. Students also have opportunities to mentor Aviation II and III students.
